What type of clothing can be made into a keepsake?
What type of clothing can be made into a keepsake? My customers ask me this a lot…
There’s a quick answer, and a longer answer.
First – the quick answer
The quick answer is “anything that holds precious memories for you”. Brackets (as long as it isn’t too thick like leather or a wool coat)
And, the longer answer
And here is the longer answer:
Your keepsake is about the memories that you want to preserve. I have made a lot of keepsakes. And, I know all the techniques to make sure the clothing that is precious to you is sewn into a keepsake that evokes all your memories
Here are just 5 types of clothing I have made keepsakes from:
1 Sports kit keepsakes
So your keepsake – your bear or cushion or rugby ball – will be sewn from the fabric of the shirt itself. I will put the piece of the clothing with the club badges on in a really prominent position so you can see it. If the player’s name is on the clothing I will use this too.
If you would like me to embroider your name, or your club’s name or a date of an important match onto your keepsake this is included in the price.
2 Baby clothes keepsakes
Baby clothes are not just babygros. I know a lot of people refer to baby keepsakes as babygrow bears but they can be made out of any type of baby clothes.
So, if your son has bib that he is wearing in his weaning photo – I can make the bib part of his keepsake. If your daughter has a t-shirt that reads ‘I love my mummy’ and it makes you feel all gooey every time you see it (even if you bought it yourself!) then include it in the clothes you give me for your keepsake.
If you are including some smaller items just ensure you make the quantity up with other items, I can help you with the quantities.
3 Evening dress keepsakes
If your Mum or Aunt was super glamorous then seeing their sequined gown or beaded dancing dress will set off sequined and beaded memories in your mind. If your friend or relative has passed away and the cruise ship or the dance floor was their happy place, then I will make their keepsake from their favourite finery.
4 Everyday clothes keepsakes
However it does not need to be a fancy piece of clothing to warrant being made into a keepsake. Please don’t read the last paragraph and feel a wobble about the clothes you have selected. I have a sense for how to put colours together that means I can always see the best way to put different clothes together so they look like they belong together
5 Christmas clothes keepsakes
I make reindeer shaped keepsakes and cushions from Christmas clothes. These are a fab addition to your Christmas deccies. For more info and pictures on my christmas reindeer click here.
All the Christmas clothing I have worked with so far has been baby clothes. Will you be the 1st to give me your Christmas jumper to make into a keepsake?
To sum up: what type of clothing can be made into a keepsake?
So to sum up… what type of clothing can be made into a keepsake? Anything, literally anything that holds precious memories for you. Your keepsake is about your memories. Whether they are of a newborn, a great season of sports or a friend who has passed. If you want to chat about it further with me click here to go to my ordering page.
How much clothing do you need for a keepsake?
To make any of my keepsake animal styles from baby clothes I will need 8-10 babygros or an equivalent amount of clothing. Any type of clothing can be used from from t-shirts to jumpers to dresses. Also socks, hats and other fabric items such as muslins and blankets. I say babygros to guide you as to the quantity of fabric I will need.
For animal style keepsakes made from adult keepsakes one medium short sleeve t-shirt is enough but more items will add interest to your finished keepsake. As I have said earlier it is all about the memories that those clothes hold for you.
